A change when someone listens…

Or in this case, Change.org have listened to my bleat, about a week ago, after i put up a petition on their site in respect of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

I liked their site: liked that my petition got an airing – but didn’t much like the fact that a petition aimed at protesting the way the trans community is often silenced and misrepresented in the press got categorised, on day two under “Gay Rights”.

No way!

Well, i wrote politely – and a very nice man writes back to say no sleight intended at all: they are aware of the issue and are planning to do something about it, and…asking for some help.

To wit, he writes to say that they recognise the current category is not inclusive and adds: “If you were to come up with another cause name to replace “gay rights,” would you lean more toward LGBT Rights, Equal Rights, Queer Rights, LGBTQIA Rights, or something else perhaps?”

I think the fact that he asks the way he does means that their categories are limited…and therefore it isn’t as simple as just asking for a “Trans Rights” category.

However, he is interested in community thoughts on this, and i’ll pass a summary back to him in due course.

Or if you’d like to drop him a line directly, he’s Michael Jones (mjones@change.org)

Doesn’t it simply come under ‘human rights’? What is good for one person should be enough for another no matter what their persuasion.

A title like “gender and sexual orientation” would be good… it covers not just LGBT but all the other identities that people don’t think about as often.
