Only in the Mail? Why the pcc must not allow textual criticism as excuse

Bullying is bad. A bit less bullying at school would be a good idea. Schools that put in place policies and approaches that reduce the incidence of bullying – often based around perceived difference on the part of minorities – should be praised.

All pretty unexceptional ideas. But not, apparently, if you write for the Daily Mail. Read the rest of this entry »

Marriage froth

I have to confess i don’t get it. I really don’t.

Both the froth by those who would like the title of “married” in place of “civil partnership” – and the froth from those on t’other side who would rather same sex couples didn’t end up acquiring this title.

Interesting (on the religious front)

Now there’s interesting. Below, i have reproduced pretty verbatim a release from the Board of America Magazine – which is perhaps the US’ leading catholic weekly publication.

So i’m going to take a second bite of the cherry here (ooer, missus!) and try and put my thoughts in order. Read the rest of this entry »

Vampires & Violets: boldly going (where no man has gone before)

With that initial promise…to boldly go where no man has gone before…that Star Trek would be a haven for diverse sexuality. But that would be to fail to acknowledge the innate conservatism of US TV executives, and the studio system behind them.

With the result that despite plenty of gestures in the direcxtion of inter-racial (and even inter-species) “getting it on” – and despite the stated intent ofseries creator Gene Rodenberry to add lgbt characters as far back as the earlty ’90′s – same sex encounters, of any form, are remarkably noticeable by their absence.

Which doesn’t prevent Star Trek from including a certain amount of lesbian eye candy, almost by accident (see below). Read the rest of this entry »
